While some expected the Boston Red Sox to finish the 2021 MLB season at the bottom of the AL East, they've started the season off to a surprising 9-4 start. As of Friday afternoon, they sit 3 games ahead of the second-place Toronto Blue Jays.

Now, Red Sox fans should be pretty happy that ESPN has taken notice of the team's hot start. In the latest MLB power rankings, EPSN has moved Boston from No. 21 all the way up to No. 12.

However, an issue that Boston fans may have with these rankings is that ESPN ranked three AL East Teams ahead of them: the New York Yankees (No. 3), Tampa Bay Rays (No. 10) and Toronto Blue Jays (No. 11).

After starting the new season 0-3, the Red Sox went on a nine-game winning streak. Boston swept the Baltimore Orioles and Rays, two divisional rivals, during their win streak.

The Red Sox are one of the highest-scoring teams in all of baseball, averaging 5.77 runs per game (T-2nd). They're also second when it comes to hits per game (9.46 hits) and team batting average (.273). As long as the team's bats remain hot, the Red Sox should continue climbing ESPN's power rankings in the future.

As it stands, the Red Sox have +500 odds to win the AL East and +3500 to win the World Series, according to Fanduel Sportsbook.
