Red Sox Designate Veteran Reliever for Assignment Ahead of Brayan Bello Debut
Already without Chris Sale, the Boston Red Sox pitching staff has been particularly battered of late with injuries to Nathan Eovaldi, Rich Hill and Garrett Whitlock. This ultimately forced the hand of Boston's front office to continue accelerating top prospect Brayan Bello's path to the majors.
Bello will make his highly-anticipated MLB debut on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays. However, this meant a spot needed to be opened up on the roster.
In a corresponding move, the Red Sox designated veteran reliever Hansel Robles for assignment.
Brayan Bello MLB Debut
Robles has not enjoyed the same successes as his first season with Boston a year ago. The eight-year veteran looked solid in 2021, pitching to a 3.60 ERA across 27 games in a Red Sox uniform. The results have completely flipped in 2022 as Robles has pitched to a 9.19 ERA since April 29. He's also allowed nine runs in his last six outings.
Red Sox News
It's a tale of two pitches moving in opposite directions. Robles may have pitched his final game in Boston and the club has seven days to trade, waive or release him.
On the other hand is a potential rising star in the Red Sox organization. Bello hadn't pitched above Double-A ball entering the year. He lasted only six brilliant outings at Double-A Portland to begin the year before moving up to Triple-A Worcester.
The top pitching prospect in Boston's organization has enjoyed nothing but dominant outings, pitching to a 1.60 ERA in Double-A and maintaining a 2.81 ERA mark after the promotion.
