The Houston Texans became the talking point of the NFL when they fired head coach David Culley after just one season. Observers around the league commended what Culley was able to do in an unfavorable situation with a rookie quarterback.

Now, reports have emerged on what went wrong in Houston.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport claims there were "philosophical differences" that led to Culley's dismissal. One issue revolved around the offense and making potential changes. Culley remained loyal to offensive coordinator Tim Kelly, and that led to both coaches ultimately being let go.

There's no denying that Houston's offense struggled, ranking last in total yards per game and third-worst in points. But Culley and company could only do so much with the hand they were dealt. The front office brought in few difference-makers on that side of the ball, setting the rookie head coach up to struggle.

There'll likely be more fallout from the Culley firing in the coming days and months given the messy handling. It's clear the decision has only further hurt Houston's perception around the league, though.
