The Tampa Bay Rays have long been one of the most dominant pitching teams in all of MLB. They posted the league's fourth-best team ERA last season (3.67) and struck out 1,478 batters (No. 9). The only thing seemingly holding them back right now is a lack of offensive firepower late in ballgames.

The Rays are determined to not fall short in the playoffs this time around and could use another batter or two to really polish off a roster filled with talented playmakers. That is why they should steal first baseman Anthony Rizzo away from the divisional rival New York Yankees.

Rays Free Agency

Rizzo remains in talk to return to the Yankees, but the idea of him joining a team that has won each of the last two AL East titles isn't unrealistic by any means. The Rays current first baseman Ji-Man Choi is coming off a season in which he slashed .229/.348/.411 with 11 home runs and 45 RBI (83 games).

Meanwhile, Rizzo scored 73 runs, smacked 22 home runs and logged 61 RBI while posting a slash line of .248/.344/.440 (141 games). That would be quite an upgrade, especially considering Rizzo can also serve as the DH. That would likely move speedy outfielder Manuel Margot back to a bench role.

The only downside here is that the three-time All-Star is going to want upwards of $20 million in any new deal he signs. The championship window is open right now for the Rays, though. Figuring out the financials is merely a second thought for a team so close to winning its first ever World Series title.

For now, Tampa Bay is tied for the eighth-best odds to win it all in 2022 at +1400, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
