It's been over a year since Tyler Glasnow last pitched in an MLB game, but he'll get one step closer to making his return on Wednesday.

The Tampa Bay Rays right-hander will return to game action on Wednesday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow last year. Glasnow will suit up for the Triple-A Durham Bulls in his first pitching appearance since June 14, 2021.

Tyler Glasnow Injury Update

Glasnow is only expected to pitch one inning for the Bulls, but Wednesday's outing still marks a major milestone in his recovery. Depending on how his rehab assignment goes, the Rays are hopeful he can return to the team before the end of the regular season in early October.

Before getting hurt, Glasnow was considered one of the better pitchers in baseball. From 2019-2021, he went 16-4 with a 2.80 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP and a 12.7 K/9 in 206 innings over 37 starts.

Accordingly, the 29-year-old could provide a significant boost to Tampa Bay's pitching staff if he's able to return, even if it's just in a bullpen role. The Rays currently hold the top Wild Card spot in the American League but still have their eyes on winning the AL East after closing the gap between them and the New York Yankees to 4.5 games. FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds are giving Tampa Bay +1300 odds to win the division.

If he returns, Glasnow could prove to be a difference-maker for the Rays down the stretch and in the postseason as a major weapon out of their bullpen. The team and its fans have waited a long time for him to come back, but if he can pick up where he left off it'll be worth the wait.
