The Tampa Bay Rays may trail by 14.5 games in the AL East standings, but that hasn't stopped the team from positioning themselves moderate buyers ahead of the deadline. Tampa Bay has a hold of the final AL Wild Card spot and looks to continue tinkering the roster for a deep postseason push.
Just hours after acquiring David Peralta from the Arizona Diamondbacks, Tampa Bay completed another trade, this time for a reliever from the Los Angeles Dodgers
Garrett Cleavinger Rays
Rays insider Marc Topkin reported the team's trade for left-handed reliever Garrett Cleavinger on Monday afternoon in exchange for 18-year-old prospect German Tapia.
Cleavinger spent the majority of his season with Los Angeles' Triple-A affiliate, racking up a stellar 2.79 ERA across 22 appearances. He touts an insane 14.6 strikeouts per nine innings.
This was a move to bolster a position of strength. Tampa Bay already owns the seventh-lowest bullpen ERA in baseball at an impressive 3.42 mark. A mid-July IL stint for Matt Wisler highlighted Tampa Bay's need to secure depth in their bullpen ranks.
For now, the Rays hold +5000 odds to win the 2022 World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook.
