Veteran cornerback Jimmy Smith has spent all 10 of his NFL seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and he recently explained how he never planned to play elsewhere. The former 2011 first-round draft pick forwent a chance at free agency this offseason to re-sign with the Ravens in December.
Smith has put together a solid career in Baltimore racking up 356 tackles, 71 pass breakups and 14 interceptions over the course of 118 games played (88 starts). It's not surprising to hear the 32-year-old pledge his loyalty given it is always hard for players to switch locations so late into their career.
"To me, this is family. I know these guys. I've known them for so long. They know me. It's hard to go to a new place, and you've got to introduce yourself, you've got to impress people. I don't want to do all that. I'm good."- Jimmy Smith on staying in Baltimore
The veteran ballhawk played a key role on a Ravens defense that gave up just 18.5 points per game last year (No. 1 in NFL). Injuries have seemed to plague him throughout his career, but Smith is the perfect depth player to have waiting in the wings behind Marlon Humphrey and Marcus Peters.
Of course, Smith leadership and experience will also be great as he continues to mentor some of the young players on the team like rookie cornerbacks Brandon Stephens and Shaun Wade.
