The Toronto Raptors' frontcourt was dealt a huge blow earlier this month when it was revealed Pascal Siakam would be sidelined for at least two weeks with an adductor strain. One player expected to be even more important following that loss was fellow big man Precious Achiuwa, but he went down with an ankle injury Wednesday night.
Now the Raptors have received some terrible news on Achiuwa's status.
The third-year big man has been ruled out indefinitely due to his ankle injury. He suffered partial tears of ligaments in his right ankle, which will sideline him for a significant chunk of time.
This is gutting news for Toronto. Achiuwa has been a key piece on the second unit, averaging 8.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 20.4 minutes per game. His current RPG and APG would mark career highs if he kept those numbers up, which is impressive given his playing time has taken a slight dip from last year (23.6 MPG).
Achiuwa joining Siakam on the bench will put extra strain on the Raptors' frontcourt depth. Rookie big man Christian Koloko should continue to start with Siakam out, but the likes of Chris Boucher, Thaddeus Young and Otto Porter Jr. now must make up for Achiuwa's absence as well.
