The Texas Rangers have been one of the busiest teams this offseason, inking major pitching deals with superstar Jacob deGrom and two All-Stars in Nathan Eovaldi and Jake Odorizzi. Texas already made big splashes a year ago with the additions of Marcus Semien and Corey Seager, making it clear this franchise is all-in on competing for championships.
On Thursday, the Rangers made another important move to add a potential key piece to their bullpen.
The Rangers are reportedly in agreement with righty Kyle Funkhouser for a minor-league deal. Don't be shocked if the proven arm ends up as a staple in Texas' MLB bullpen, however.
Funkhouser did not pitch due to injury in 2022, but operated as a very reliable option for the Detroit Tigers in 2021. He made 57 appearances with a solid 3.42 ERA during that campaign.
While pitching was a problem for Texas last year, most of the blame can be shouldered by the rotation (before these offseason additions of deGrom, Eovaldi and Odorizzi). Texas ranked 25th of 30 teams in starting pitching ERA but held the 12th-best bullpen ERA in the sport.
Of course, bullpens are fickle in the MLB and the need for a never-ending plethora of bullpen arms is top priority for every team in baseball. For now, the Rangers hold +5000 odds to win the 2023 World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook.
