The Las Vegas Raiders' release of Pro Bowl center Rodney Hudson left the entire NFL world dumbfounded on Tuesday. Hudson's release actually costs $2 million in 2021 cap space for the Raiders, adding further confusion to the move.
Now, Las Vegas needs to somehow replace another top talent on their offensive line. With that in mind, here are three possible replacements for Hudson.
3. Andre James
Possibly the most likely choice, backup center Andre James may be called upon to step up as starter. After being undrafted out of UCLA, James caught on with the Raiders in 2019. He's played in just 116 offensive snaps for the Raiders across his two seasons, featuring more prominently on special teams in 2020 (82 snaps), but he could get the nod since the team seemingly is high on him.
2. Nick Martin
One free-agent center option for Las Vegas is the recently released Nick Martin. The former Houston Texan has started all 16 games in each of the last three seasons, providing more experience if that's what the Raiders pursue in a Hudson replacement. Martin earned just 4 penalties and allowed 1 sack in 980 offensive snaps played last season. But with only a 56.1 grade from Pro Football Focus, he could be an affordable target.
1. David Andrews
David Andrews is the top-rated center remaining in this year's free agent class, per PFF. Andrews came back to start 12 games for the New England Patriots last year after missing the entire 2019 season. The 28-year-old earned a solid 67.7 PFF grade for his 2020 campaign, accounting for 2 sacks and 1 penalty in 724 snaps. There's no one-to-one replacement for Hudson, but Andrews is among the best at his position still on the market, and the Raiders need to invest in protection for Derek Carr.
