Quarterback is the most scrutinized position in the NFL, and potentially across all other professional leagues as well. Quarterbacks receive a disproportionate amount of blame for seemingly every loss, but thankfully, they're extremely well compensated for their troubles.
While Russell Wilson is currently the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, there are a few players with a chance of passing him when their contracts expire. Here are three QBs that could soon leapfrog Wilson to become the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.
3. Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys (FA in 2020)
While Dak Prescott hasn't produced like some of the other top-tier players in football, being QB1 in Dallas always carries a little extra cache. Prescott's contract will expire at the end of this season, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will likely do whatever it takes to keep him in Dallas. Even if Prescott isn't as valuable as some of his peers, he's a proven winner and could be getting a record-breaking contract in the not-too-distant future.
2. Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles (FA in 2021)
Had Carson Wentz not torn his ACL in 2017, he likely would've won the NFL MVP award in his second season as a starter. Unfortunately, Wentz's recovery hasn't gone as planned and he didn't look like the same player in 2018. However, if he bounces back in 2019 with another MVP-worthy campaign, he could be re-signing a lucrative extension with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021.
1. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs (FA in 2022)
Patrick Mahomes took the NFL by storm in just his first season as a starter, culminating in winning the NFL MVP award. While Mahomes' contract won't be up until 2022, he's likely going to be in line for a massive deal, barring some catastrophic injury. Mahomes likely has the biggest arm in the NFL, and could soon be the owner of the NFL's biggest contract to match.
