Pirates Get Concerning Ke'Bryan Hayes Injury Update

Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes is one of the more exciting young MLB players when healthy, but injuries have been an issue. Now, a lower-back injury has fans wondering if he's due to miss some time yet again.

The Pirates received some concerning news after the 25-year-old was held out of Friday's contest against the San Diego Padres. Hayes commented on his injury with reporters, saying that he believes the issue stems from an offseason weightlifting problem.

Ke'Bryan Hayes Injury Update

Hayes, whose last appearance was on Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies, added that it "was a grind getting through" said contest. The fact that he was also wearing back wrap isn't something that Pirates fans are feeling optimistic about. Only time will tell just how serious his injury is.

The former 2015 first-round pick currently has 40 hits and 12 RBIs without a home run in 147 at-bats over 40 games in the 2022 MLB season. He isn't looking nearly as dynamic as he did as a rookie two years ago, but he's batting better this year (.272) than he did in 2021 (.257).

In the meantime, the Pirates are moving Rodolfo Castro from shortstop to Hayes' spot at third. The 23-year-old has played 40.0 innings over six career games (five starts) at the hot corner, yielding a 1.000 fielding percentage.
