As if losing the World Series wasn't bad enough, Philadelphia Phillies fans have also been worrying about the status of superstar Bryce Harper since the playoffs ended. Harper suffered a torn UCL during the regular season and has been weighing his options regarding an offseason recovery plan.

On Wednesday, Harper and the Phillies made a decision on how they plan to deal with the issue.

Bryce Harper Injury Update

According to Phillies beat reporter Todd Zolecki, Harper will undergo UCL surgery on Wednesday, Nov. 23. It's unclear if the operation will be Tommy John surgery, however, which is the procedure that pitchers typically have to repair the same injury.

Accordingly, Harper's return timeline remains unknown at the moment. Even if he does have Tommy John, however, that doesn't necessarily mean he'll miss extensive time in 2023. Harper could return during the first half and continue to play designated hitter, where he spent the rest of 2022 after suffering the initial injury.

Shohei Ohtani followed a similar timeline several years ago after undergoing Tommy John in late 2018. That's an encouraging sign for Harper, who is only one season removed from winning the 2021 NL MVP Award with Philadelphia.

Phillies fans hope Harper can return to the lineup sooner rather than later, but they should have more clarity after he undergoes the procedure. Losing the 30-year-old slugger for a while would hurt, but Philadelphia still made the playoffs with him missing 63 games last year and has enough talent to do so again.
