The Philadelphia Phillies got off to a solid 3-1 start to the 2022 MLB season, but have since dropped seven of their last nine games. Their lack of pitching depth and offensive struggles have them in fourth place in the NL East division. The team is also plummeting in ESPN's latest power rankings.
Philadelphia Phillies Power Rankings
The Phillies check in at No. 19, which is a whopping nine spots lower than where they were at following Week 1 of the season. They are ranked behind nine other NL squads and that includes a pair of divisional rivals. The New York Mets are all the way up at No. 2 and the Atlanta Braves are at No. 9.
An offseason that was filled with big signings saw Philadelphia add sluggers Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos to the mix. It hasn't mattered too much, though, considering the fact that manager Joe Girardi's team is averaging less runs per game this year than it was in 2021 (4.38 vs. 4.53).
The offense is likely going to figure things out, but the pitching mishaps do not have an end in sight right now. In fact, the Phillies own the third-worst earned run average in baseball (5.22). 2021 NL Cy Young runner-up Zack Wheeler has given up 8 ER in 7.2 innings pitched thanks to a lowered velocity.
The season has only just begun, so that means there is a lot of time for Philadelphia to get back on track and put together a winning streak or two. For now, the Phillies have odds set at +400 to win the NL East and odds set at +2000 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
