The Philadelphia Phillies got a pleasant surprise on one of their pitching prospects on Wednesday, who may be available to pitch for them this year after all.

Noah Song has seen his Navy status transferred from active duty to selective reserves and is expected to report to Phillies Spring Training on Thursday.

Philadelphia Phillies News

This is exciting news for Philadelphia, which selected Song from the Boston Red Sox during December's Rule 5 Draft. At the time it was unknown when Song would be allowed to play again, making the selection somewhat risky.

Well, the Phillies' gamble is already paying off as Song was able to get transfer on his naval commitment. The 25-year-old right-hander will have to make up for lost time, however, as he has not pitched professionally since 2019.

The fourth-round draft pick showed promise that year with a 1.06 ERA in seven starts for Boston's Single-A affiliate. He will need to show that potential again in Spring Training if he wants to make the defending NL champions, who don't exactly have a ton of roster spots up for grabs right now.

Song is worth keeping an eye on in camp to see if he still has the talent that made him a highly regarded prospect a few years ago. If he does, he may finally get his shot at the major leagues.
