Game 1 of the 2022 World Series is rapidly approaching, setting up an exciting battle between the Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros. Houston was the best team in the American League (again) this season, while Philadelphia punched its World Series ticket with a Cinderella-esque October.

As Game 1 looms, Phillies manager Rob Thomson confirmed his starting pitchers for the first two matchups in the series.

Aaron Nola will get the ball in Game 1 and Zack Wheeler gets the nod in Game 2. Neither choice is surprising given that they are clearly the team's best two starting pitchers.

Nola is coming off a historic regular season and has continued to pitch well in the postseason, going 2-1 with a 3.12 ERA in three playoff starts. Meanwhile, Wheeler has been lights-out in October with a 1.78 ERA in four postseason starts.

The Astros have yet to officially announce their first batch of starting pitchers, but signs point to Justin Verlander getting the call in Game 1 and Framber Valdez likely going in Game 2. As it stands, the Phillies are slight underdogs in the series (+165), according to World Series odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
