One of the most highly anticipated training camp position battles seems to be at the quarterback position for the New England Patriots. Veteran Cam Newton struggled to lead the offense last season, but remains the favorite to lock up the job over rookie first-round pick Mac Jones.
Patriots Starting QB Odds
Newton currently has odds set at -185 to be the team's Week 1 QB compared to Jones' odds of +170, according NFL odds posted to FanDuel Sportsbook. However, it doesn't seem to be a done deal just yet as head coach Bill Belichick hasn't committed to either signal-caller at this point.
The Patriots re-signed Newton this offseason after he posted a 7-8 record as the starter in 2020. However, he did not perform well in the passing game averaging a career low 177.1 yards through the air per game. He had just 8 passing touchdowns on the season and simply looked underwhelming.
On the other side, New England used the No. 15 overall pick to select former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Mac Jones. The young gunslinger finished second in the Heisman voting during his junior season after completing 77.4% of his pass attempts for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns.
This is going to be a storyline to keep an eye on as Week 1 gets closer and closer as no one ever knows what Belichick has up his sleeve. The Patriots currently have odds set at +126 to make the playoffs and odds set at +3200 to win the Super Bowl.
