News came out on Saturday that the Carolina Panthers are expected to bring head coach Matt Rhule back for a third season despite another lackluster finish in 2021.

The next order of business would be finding a new offensive coordinator after firing Joe Brady, and the team's top candidates have been revealed.

Panthers Offensive Coordinator Rumors

Carolina is targeting Bill O'Brien or Jay Gruden to take over the position in 2022. Joe Brady was fired at the midway point of the season and running backs coach Jeff Nixon became the interim OC. Keep in mind the Panthers have ranked in the bottom half of the NFL in scoring in each of the last three years.

O'Brien is currently preparing the Alabama Crimson Tide offense to take on the Georgia Bulldogs in the College Football National Championship on Monday night. He was also the Houston Texans head coach from 2014-20 and compiled an overall record of 52-48 (4 playoff appearances).

Meanwhile, Gruden has been out of coaching since 2020 after being fired as the Jacksonville Jaguars' offensive coordinator. He has head coaching experience as well, taking the Washington Football Team to the playoffs one time and finishing a six-year stint with a 35-49-1 record.

Reports claim the Panthers may also look toward Los Angeles Ram's OC Kevin O'Connell to take the position. No matter what, there's no denying that the Panthers need to revamp their offensive strategy in order to stay competitive in a tough NFC South division.

Carolina will look to end the season with an upset win when they take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 18. The Panthers are slated as 9-point road underdogs in that one, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
