The Carolina Panthers head into the 2022 season with question marks at the quarterback position. Sam Darnold is expected to start for head coach Matt Rhule, but the idea of re-signing veteran Cam Newton has reportedly been thrown around. That has to be a surprise following his efforts in 2021.
Newton appeared in eight games for Carolina last season, drawing five starts. He lost every single one of those starts and averaged a disappointing 85.5 passing yards per game. Not only that, but Newton also threw just 4 touchdowns compared to 5 interceptions and looked unprepared at times.
The 32-year-old's calling card has always been his rushing abilities. Newton did rush for 230 yards (4.9 average) and 5 touchdowns in 2021. It did not end up making a difference, though. Carolina has still remained in touch with Newton throughout the offseason just in case he fits into their plans.
No matter what, Carolina has to improve at QB if they want any shot of making the playoffs for the first time since 2017. Coincidentally, that was the last time Newton started each game in an NFL season. While he led to the Panthers to an 11-5 record, he owns a poor 13-23 record since.
The Panthers possess the No. 6 overall pick in the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft and could always opt to address their QB issues at that time. Both Malik Willis and Kenny Pickett are rising up draft boards.
Carolina remains a long shot to win Super Bowl 57 with odds set at +10000, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
