The Carolina Panthers have found their injury replacement for Zane Gonzalez, signing kicker Eddy Pineiro to a one-year deal on Wednesday. Pineiro will replace Gonzalez, who was placed on the IR with a groin injury on Tuesday and may require season-ending surgery.
Pineiro was brought in along with Brian Johnson to audition for the open kicker role on Monday after Gonzalez was carted off the field during Carolina's final preseason game last week. The 26-year-old Pineiro won the competition and will open the season as the Panthers' kicker.
Before signing with Carolina, Pineiro most recently played for the New York Jets last year. Pineiro also played with the Chicago Bears as a rookie in 2019 but did not play in 2020.
Pineiro has proven to be an effective kicker in his NFL career thus far, converting 86.1% of his field goal attempts and 92.3% of his extra points. Accordingly, he could prove to be a solid replacement for Gonzalez, who's been more accurate on extra points (94.8%) but less accurate on field goals (80.5%).
