The Carola Panthers are furiously beginning their head coaching search, leaving no option unturned. Just one full day removed from their regular season finale, a campaign in which the team went just 7-10 for a fifth straight losing record, Carolina has already booked a handful of interviews with top candidates.
There's an early theme arising from Carolina's search: coaches that either played or have worked extensively with the quarterback position.
On Tuesday, another quarterback specialist was added to Carolina's list.
According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the Panthers requested an interview with New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. Kafka joined Brian Daboll's squad this season and has one year of experience as an offensive coordinator, but is deeply tied to the quarterback position.
The former Northwestern standout spent four years working with Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs as a quarterbacks coach. He also spent five years with various NFL teams as a backup quarterback.
Kafka joins a list of candidates that includes interim head coach Steve Wilks, former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell, former Colts coach Frank Reich, Lions OC Ben Johnson, Eagles OC Shane Steichen and Bills OC Ken Dorsey.
Throughout this season, Kafka did a phenomenal job with Daniel Jones, who finished with career highs in passing yards, QB rating, QBR and a low mark of 5 interceptions.
