The results under head coach Matt Rhule have been far from inspiring for the Carolina Panthers. He's failed to record more than five wins in each of his first two seasons, and Carolina has started the 2022 campaign on a similarly sour note at 0-2.
That's what makes the Panthers' current stance on Rhule's job security so frustrating.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reports Carolina owner David Tepper is "planning to be patient rather than reactionary" in terms of Rhule's status as head coach. Rapoport's sources also claim "no change is imminent" on the coaching staff, meaning Rhule's slow start isn't going to cost him his job yet.
This certainly isn't the mindset Panthers fans want to hear. No coach's seat across the league should be hotter than Rhule's, yet he seems relatively safe for now despite failing to sniff success over his first two years.
This squad hasn't looked any different despite some major personnel changes this offseason. Baker Mayfield struggled against his former team in Week 1, and the offense mustered just 16 points in Week 2 against the New York Giants.
Sunday's matchup with the injured New Orleans Saints presents an opportunity for Rhule to snap this team's funk. The Panthers currently lead 13-0 in the third quarter thanks to a fumble recovered by the defense for a touchdown. Live NFL odds on FanDuel Sportsbook peg Carolina as 10.5-point favorites.
