The MLB offseason is officially here, and to no surprise, starting pitching is at a premium on the free agent market. This year's free agent class is top-heavy with the likes of Jacob deGrom and Justin Verlander, although there are several intriguing international prospects as well.
The best international starting pitcher available is Japan's Kodai Senga. While he's already drawn interest from several teams, the San Diego Padres took a big step in their negotiations with him earlier this week.
Kodai Senga Rumors
Padres insider Dennis Lin reported the team met with Senga in San Diego on Thursday. Not surprisingly, he indicates that the Padres are "one of many teams" interested in Senga's services.
San Diego may have an advantage in the process considering that Yu Darvish is apparently close with Senga, who also played with current Padres Nick Martinez and Robert Suarez in Japan.
Landing Senga would be another blockbuster acquisition for the Padres, who have made their fair share of those under GM A.J. Preller over the last few years. It would also help close the sizable gap between them and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, which Los Angeles won by a whopping 22 games last year.
