The San Diego Padres have never been a team to take the safe route. A shocking trade for outfielder Juan Soto and a massive free agent deal for shortstop Xander Bogaerts only prove that notion. This time around, it's a record-setting deal for one international prospect that has the Padres in the news.

San Diego has signed catcher Ethan Salas in a deal that includes a $5.6 million bonus. It's a bonus that eats up almost the entirety of the team's bonus pool for this signing window. The 16-year-old out of Venezuela is ranked No. 1 in Baseball America's and MLB.com's international amateur rankings.

Salas is the younger brother of Miami Marlins' prospect Jose Salas and part of a family chock full of pro baseball players. He is widely considered the best pure hitting prospect in this year's international signing class due to the fact that he has experience hitting pitches that reach 90-plus mph in velocity.

The kid's pitch recognition and defense behind the plate are superb, too. There's no underestimating Salas' ceiling if he can keep improving on the rapid pace he has been. Evaluators in San Diego believe the Venezuelan catcher could rival shortstop Jackson Merrill as the team's No. 1 prospect right away.

Of course, Salas' debut in the majors is still years down the road. Seeing him shine in the minor leagues would give the fans something to get excited about considering the subpar catching depth in San Diego. Austin Nola, Jorge Alfaro and Luis Campusano are expected to see playing time in 2023.

The Padres have odds set at +1000 to win the 2023 World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
