As the 2021 MLB season rolls on, the San Diego Padres continue to be in a battle for NL West supremacy. A 37-25 record has them 1.5 games behind the San Francisco Giants for first place in the division. However, they also have to worry about the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are 3.0 games out of the top spot. Needless to say, the Padres could use some extra help to give them the edge.

One player that the Padres could trade for to give them some help is Texas Rangers OF/1B/DH Joey Gallo. While it was thought that a potential deal for the former All-Star was off the table from last season, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

San Diego Padres Rumors

The Padres tried to acquire Gallo ahead of last season's deadline, but a potential deal fell through once they didn't want to pay the Rangers' asking price. However, the 27-year-old is a free agent this offseason, which means his cost to acquire him should be lower.

The Padres don't have any major holes in the outfield, so it's not like they need Gallo. It's just that there's no denying that he'd help take the team to the next level. After all, he was just an All-Star in 2019 and won a Gold Glove last year in RF. While his .207 batting average isn't the prettiest thing in the world, Gallo still has 10 home runs and 26 RBIs on the season. He's also been walked an MLB-leading 45 times, which has helped give him the second-best on-base percentage of his career (.365).

Gallo's power would easily help San Diego in its quest to win the division. The team currently has +170 odds to win the NL West, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, trailing only the Dodgers (-210). Meanwhile, San Diego's odds of winning the World Series sit at +700.
