When the MLB calendar turned to August, it seemed like the San Diego Padres decided to rally around (5-2 record in August) the absence of their injured superstar, Fernando Tatis Jr. San Diego remains in third place in the NL West. Now trailing the San Francisco Giants by 7.0 games, the franchise may have turned its full attention on the Wild Card.

However, any hopes of a deep postseason run will largely depend on the health of Tatis Jr. And, on Monday night, the Padres got some very promising news in that category.

According to reports, the superstar shortstop has begun taking swings in the cage and performed some on-field activities for the first time since landing on the injured list in late July.

Fernando Tatis Jr. Injury Update

This is just music to the ears of Padres fans. While no official timetable has yet been released on Tatis Jr.'s return, it's looking more promising that he'll see the field sometime before the postseason.

We all know the importance of the shortstop's bat in San Diego's lineup. In just his third MLB season, Tatis Jr. is slashing .292/.373/.651 with 31 home runs and 23 stolen bases. His home run, stolen bases and .651 slugging percentage numbers all lead the National League ranks.

Currently, San Diego holds a 3.5-game lead for the second NL Wild Card spot. The Padres' +1600 odds to win the World Series rank as the T-8th best in baseball, according to MLB odds on FanDuel Sportsbook. Don't be surprised to see those tick up once Tatis Jr. returns to full health.
