The San Diego Padres started the 2021 MLB season on a hot note, looking like a playoff team as they went 67-50 to start the year. Unfortunately, a 12-33 record down the stretch forced them to miss the playoffs for the 14th time in 15 seasons.

The Padres look to start fresh next week when they open the 2022 MLB season with a series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. San Diego fans will now be excited to know that their team has since announced who the Opening Day starting pitcher will be.

Padres Opening Day 2022

Padres manager Bob Melvin announced Thursday afternoon that Yu Darvish will be the club's Opening Day starter against the Diamondbacks last week.

Darvish was traded to the Padres in December 2020 and didn't take long to become a fan favorite, pitching to a 2.44 ERA in his first 16 starts. Unfortunately, the rest of his season wasn't as promising (likely due to injuries), ending with the veteran righty going 8-11 in 30 starts with a 4.22 ERA and 1.094 WHIP.

Nevertheless, Darvish's efforts still earned him his fifth MLB All-Star appearance and he'll look to build off that in 2022. He's 3-3 in 10 career starts against the D-Backs with an unimpressive 4.53 ERA, however, his 14.3 strikeouts per nine innings against Arizona suggests that it could be an entertaining performance to watch.

Despite last season's collapse, oddsmakers still have faith in the Padres. FanDuel Sportsbook is currently giving San Diego +1600 odds (10th) to win the 2022 World Series.
