The San Diego Padres have been on a roll as of late. After a bit of a slump, they've gone 9-1 in their last 10 games and have claimed the top spot in the NL West with a 30-18 record.
So what more could Padres fans want to see from their team? Well, seeing pitcher Drew Pomeranz return to health would be a good step. The lefty reliever has been sidelined over the last few weeks with lat tightness and it looks like he could still be a ways away from returning.
Padres manager Jayce Tingler announced on Tuesday that Pomeranz suffered a setback over the weekend. This certainly isn't the news that the team wanted to hear regarding one of their best relievers.
Drew Pomeranz Injury Update
Tingler said that Pomeranz's setback came when he was practicing against hitters over the weekend. He'll now have to be sidelined for around a week until he'll be re-evaluated to continue his rehab.
While he was once a starting pitcher in the MLB, Pomeranz has transitioned into a full-time reliever over the last couple of seasons. If anything, it's helped him stay more relevant and effective than he has been in years.
Pomeranz has appeared in 14 contests for the Padres this season, recording a 1.98 ERA and 20 strikeouts through 13.2 innings pitched. Pomeranz has also allowed just one home run on the campaign, which shows just how effective he is at keeping the ball inside of the park.
The Padres currently have the 3rd-best odds to win the 2021 World Series at +750, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Getting Pomeranz back in the bullpen would be another step to turning these odds into a reality.
