The Green Bay Packers' defense will be shorthanded in their Week 10 game against the red-hot Dallas Cowboys — and potentially longer.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur revealed that cornerback Eric Stokes is "unlikely" to play again in the 2022 season, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky. The 23-year-old ballhawk injured his ankle in last week's loss to the Detroit Lions and was seen walking with crutches at practice this week.

The silver lining to the situation is that LaFleur added that "no final decision has been made" about Stokes' status for the rest of the year. Nevertheless, the Packers are still riding a five-game losing streak and if it continues, there's little reason to rush the ex-Georgia Bulldog back into the lineup.

Stokes experienced a down season before his injury struck. After only allowing a 49.5% completion rate and 71.3 passer rating as a rookie in 2021, Green Bay's former first-rounder has allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete 80% of attempts this season en route to a 123.5 rating.

Even with those shortcomings, Stokes played a decent-sized role in the Packers allowing the second-fewest passing yards per game. Now, his presence will be felt with the Cowboys coming to town. Dallas may not be dominant through the air this year, but QB Dak Prescott has averaged 320.3 passing yards in three career games against the Packers.

Only time will tell which player(s) steps up in Stokes' absence. If no one can rise to the task, the Packers' season could be as good as done.

Even with the home-field advantage on their side, things look grim for the Packers this weekend. FanDuel Sportsbook currently lists the Cowboys as 4.5-point road favorites in a game where the over/under is set at 43 points.
