It's no secret that former NFL players can make good coaches. Possessing on-the-field experience isn't something most people in the world have, and it can bring a different understanding of the game that has the potential to elevate any coaching staff.

Former NFL wideout Miles Austin is making his way up the coaching ranks, taking on a new role with the New York Jets for the 2021 season.

New Jets head coach Robert Saleh is tapping into his San Francisco 49ers roots with his hire of Austin as New York's wide receivers coach. Austin was with the 49ers during their Super Bowl run in 2019 as an offensive quality control coach, which was Saleh's third season as the team's defensive coordinator.

Bringing in Austin as a WRs coach is an excellent move. Austin broke into the NFL as an undrafted rookie, earning a roster spot with the Dallas Cowboys and spending eight seasons with the team.

Austin notched two Pro Bowl selections as Cowboy before finishing his career with one-year stops with the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles.

New York is hoping to start a new era with Saleh, and his hiring of Austin as WRs coach is already a positive move for a team that struggled at that position in 2020.
