Nevada has been the dominant force in U.S. sports betting for quite some time. However, the state that Las Vegas calls home clearly has some competition.
In May 2019, more money was bet at New Jersey sportsbooks than at Nevada's books. This is a first, and amazingly it only took a year for Jersey to take the top spot, in terms of money wagered.
New Jersey had $318.9 million in bets in May, while Nevada reeled in $317.4 million in wagers. Considering this was the first year New Jersey had legal sport betting, this is quite the accomplishment for the Garden State.
While Nevada is likely to remain the authority on U.S. sports betting, it's encouraging to see New Jersey thriving so quickly. Hopefully New Jersey's instant success is a galvanizing force that convinces more states to legalize sports betting.
