Following the Brooklyn Nets parting ways with head coach Steve Nash, it seemed like it took them about five minutes to decide they were replacing him with suspended Celtics head coach Ime Udoku. It makes it pretty impossible to believe anything other than these talks were happening for a while now behind the scenes.

Nets Hire Ime Udoka

From a basketball perspective, this seems like a sound hire. It makes sense. Udoka brought the Celtics to the NBA Finals last season. However, when it comes to Udoka and the Nets, basketball is far from the only thing that should be considered.

While we don't know specifics, and we may never know the full story of Udoka's suspension from the Celtics, the optics are awful and tone-deaf by a Nets organization that is in the news more for its controversy and bad press than it is for winning games on the court for the past two years.

This hire makes an already nearly impossible franchise to root for, even closer to that. Now, do people generally deserve a second chance? Sure, especially when we don't know the specifics. Maybe the Nets do. If they don't and things turn out to be worse than we know now, it will all come crashing down on a Nets team that is already on the brink of collapse.

Udoka will have to do a lot of winning and he will have to do it fast, and even then, it might not keep Kyrie Irving or Kevin Durant happy enough to stick around. That's a doomsday scenario for Brooklyn and one that's a real possibility.
