The Washington Nationals are nearing the 2022 MLB season's end without much to play for. A 41-83 record through 124 games shows they were out of playoff contention a long time ago. Now, the Nationals will spend the final weeks showcasing younger players to see what they have.

In fact, the Nats will likely give one of those opportunities to top prospect Cade Cavalli later this week. MLB insider Grant Paulsen reports that Washington is planning on letting the right-handed pitcher debut on Friday, Aug. 30 against the Cincinnati Reds at Nationals Park.

Nationals Roster Rumors

Saying that Nationals fans are excited to see Cavalli's MLB debut is an understatement. After all, not only is he a former 2020 first-round pick, but the Tulsa, OK, native opened the 2022 campaign as Baseball America's No. 27-ranked prospect in the entire nation.

Cavalli has been living up to the hype with Tripe-A Roster. In 20 starts with the Red Wings, the 24-year-old righty has gone 6-4 with a 3.71 ERA and 1.175 WHIP. He's struck out 104 batters over 97 innings and has only surrendered six runs on 23 hits over his last seven starts.

Cavalli's presence will give Washington's underperforming pitching staff a necessary boost. The Nationals' hurlers have combined for an MLB-worst 5.15 ERA, opening the door for Cavalli to prove that he's more than deserving of a spot on the club's 2023 roster.

Only time will tell just how many innings Cavalli will pitch on Friday. Regardless of how long he pitches, one thing is for sure: this was a bright spot in an abysmal campaign that Nationals fans desperately needed.
