3 Most Likely NFL Teams to Draft Malik Willis
The 2022 NFL Draft doesn't have as many notable quarterbacks this season, but one prospect getting a lot of attention is Liberty Flames QB Malik Willis.
The 22-year-old Atlanta, GA native had a career year with the Flames in the fall, racking up 207 completions, 2,857 passing yards and 27 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. He also torched the opposition on the ground, recording another 878 yards and 13 TDs on 197 carries.
With Willis projecting to be a first-round selection, here's a look at the three most likely NFL teams to draft him next month.
Malik Willis NFL Draft
1. Pittsburgh Steelers
Now that Ben Roethlisberger's career has come to an end, the Pittsburgh Steelers need a new starting quarterback. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday that the Steelers are willing to take a quarterback at pick No. 20. There's a good chance that Wilis will be available when the Steelers are on the clock and it would be a no-brainer to draft them. From Najee Harris to Diontae Johnson to Pat Freiermuth and everyone in between, Pittsburgh has several pass-catching options to help Willis thrive. Mike Tomlin is also a terrific coach who could have the same impact on the rookie's career as he did on Roethlisberger's.
2. Washington Commanders
Taylor Heinicke was the Washington Commanders' starting QB last season but didn't yield the results that the organization had hoped for. While he's a decent stop-gap, he likely won't help the Commanders win a championship any time soon. Holding the 11th overall pick at the 2022 NFL Draft, Washington could use that selection on Willis. Bringing in the promising prospect would allow him to sit and learn for a season behind Heinicke until he's ready in 2023. If everything works out and Willis reaches his potential, Commanders fans could have a QB to be proud of for years to come.
3. Atlanta Falcons
Veteran QB Matt Ryan is slated to be the Atlanta Falcons' starter next season, but things could change. Head coach Arthur Smith revealed earlier this week that the Falcons would be willing to move Ryan for the right price, which opens the door for them to draft a quarterback. With the eighth overall pick next month, they should have a shot to draft Wilis. For starters, he's an Atlanta-born talent and could excel in his hometown. Although he might not be ready to be a starter yet, Willis could spend a year or two learning from Ryan to perfect his skills. By the time the latter is ready to move on, Falcons fans will have a new starting QB to lead them into the next era of Atlanta football.
