The MLB trade deadline is quickly approaching on July 30, which means that trade rumors have begun heating up.
The New York Yankees have spoken to the Miami Marlins regarding a potential trade surrounding veteran outfielder Starling Marte. According to NJ.com's Brendan Kuty, the Yankees and Marlins have had talks as recently as Thursday night about getting a deal done.
These rumors come a few weeks after Miami reportedly offered Marte a $30 million contract extension. Considering how the former All-Star was allegedly seeking $20 million more than that, it isn't surprising that the Marlins could trade him ahead of the deadline rather than lose him for nothing.
Starling Marte Yankees Rumors
With several outfielders on the injured list, the Yankees desperately need someone with Marte's talents to help them out. Through 59 games with the Marlins this season, he's recorded 7 home runs and 23 RBI while slashing .289/.388/.445.
Once seen as a lock to dominate the American League, the Yankees are losing ground in the AL East. With a 50-45 record, New York sits 8.0 games behind the first-place Boston Red Sox and 4.5 games back of the second AL Wild Card spot. Needless to say, the club needs could be desperate to trade for a player of Marte's caliber to help them shift the momentum back in their direction.
The Yankees currently have +2100 odds (10th) to win the 2021 World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. While those odds are far from terrible, it goes to show how injuries have affected their odds compared to when they opened the 2021 MLB season at +550.
