Now that the second half of the 2022 MLB season is underway, contending teams are doing what they can to make a push for this fall's postseason. With several teams on the cusp of a playoff spot, one has to wonder which of them can make a second-half push in the coming months.
When it comes to MLB Network, the Cleveland Guardians are seen as second-half contenders. Baseball insider Joel Sherman said on Monday that he believes that the Guardians are one of the top teams currently on the "outside looking in."
Cleveland Guardians News
Sherman said that one thing he likes about the Guardians is that their remaining schedule includes 15 combined games against the Seattle Mariners and Chicago White Sox. With four games separating the three clubs, it's easy to see how victories by Cleveland could create some much-needed separation.
The Guardians have surprised many people this season, going 48-46 through 94 games. It certainly helps when they're getting breakout performances from players like Andres Gimenez, who already has 11 home runs and 45 RBIs with a .304 batting average through 83 games.
Though the team's pitching can be shaky at times, starters Triston McKenzie and Shane Bieber have been solid this year. Having said that, Cleveland's 3.90 team ERA (No. 15) shows that things could be better, especially in the latter half of the starting rotation.
The Guardians are also only averaging 4.39 runs per game (No. 16) this year, making the offense something that Sherman thinks should be addressed. Baltimore Orioles slugger Trey Mancini is one offensive bat that Cleveland has been linked to in trade rumors.
At the end of the day, it's clear that the Guardians have something special going on in their clubhouse. It remains to be seen if that can lead to a playoff appearance or if fans will be left postseason-less for the third time in four years.
Guardians World Series Odds
Even if the Guardians somehow make the 2022 MLB playoffs, winning the title will be an uphill battle. FanDuel Sportsbook has Cleveland available at only +10000 odds (No. 17) to win the World Series this year.
