Justin Verlander was coming off Tommy John surgery last season, but that didn't stop him from winning the Cy Young, the Comeback Player of the Year and a World Series, all in one season, at age 39.

Verlander opted out of the final year of his contract with the Astros and now is seeking a raise and a multi-year deal, reportedly somewhere in the range of the deal Max Scherzer got with the Mets last offseason that pays him roughly $43 million per year.

Jon Heyman reports that Houston has no interest in doing that though, mainly because of the three years. Verlander would be about two years older than Scherzer when he signed that contract and that's a lot of money to commit to a guy that will be 42 in the final year of the contract.

This reluctance to meet Verlander's demands could give an opportunity to the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets, who have all expressed some level of interest in Verlander. Heyman says that someone with Knowledge of the Astros' thinking told him:

“Quietly, they prefer not to sign him for three years. Verlander was great in-season but they carried him in the postseason."

Couple that with how deep and talented the rest of Houston's staff is, then that $40 million-plus could be better spent elsewhere. That being said, Verlander returning to Houston certainly isn't out of the question, it will just be about how motivated the two sides are for a reunion. Verlander isn't going to and shouldn't take a discount coming off a Cy Young, but Houston will only pay what it will pay.

Whether those two numbers can coincide, only time will tell.
