The 2022-23 MLB offseason is already in full swing. Much of the attention has been placed on the star-studded free agent class, but many teams will opt to improve their rosters via trade.
That's exactly the case for the Milwaukee Brewers, who have been rumored to be shopping starting pitcher Corbin Burnes.
Why in the world is Milwaukee looking to move the 2021 NL Cy Young winner? MLB insider Ken Rosenthal explained why:
Corbin Burnes Trade Rumors
Burnes and Brewers co-ace Brandon Woodruff are both right-handed starters in their late 20s who are under contract through 2024 and rank among the best pitchers in baseball. On paper, there's not much separating them.
Rosenthal believes there are a couple of reasons why Milwaukee might prefer Woodruff over Burnes. The Brewers "might believe they stand a chance of signing Woodruff to an extension," according to Rosenthal. He also explained the franchise "might believe that Burnes might never match his Cy Young season in 2021, while Woodruff still offers upside."
If Milwaukee does deal Burnes, the team would likely net a pretty significant return for the two-time All-Star. As it stands, the Brewers currently have the 13th-best odds (+3000) on FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds to win the 2023 World Series.
