Though the Baltimore Orioles have been one of the worst MLB teams this season, things have been brighter lately. The Orioles' 14-12 record in June was their first winning month in five seasons, leading to an MLB insider projecting Baltimore to make an interesting decision ahead of the trade deadline.
ESPN's David Schoenfield says that the Orioles will not need to blow up the team and trade away every key veteran following their successful stretch. Instead, Schoenfield has relief pitcher Jorge Lopez as the one player that the club should prioritize moving.
Orioles Trade Rumors
Some fans might be surprised if the Orioles trade Lopez away. After all, the 29-year-old righty still has two more seasons under team control before becoming a free agent in 2025. Nevertheless, Schoenfield argues that it'd be a missed opportunity if Baltimore doesn't cash in on Lopez's career year.
After going 3-14 with a 6.07 ERA as a starter with the Orioles last season, Lopez has turned his career around. The Puerto Rican hurler has an impressive 1.88 ERA and 13 saves in 35 relief appearances in 2022, pitching to a career-best 0.991 WHIP while averaging 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings.
The bonus about trading Lopez away is the aforementioned fact that he's eligible for arbitration in 2023 and 2024. Schoenfield says that fact could land the Orioles a "nice prospect or two in return," further helping their rebuild.
There's no guarantee that the Orioles will move on from Lopez in the coming weeks. While his solid season could keep him in Baltimore for another year, his trade value may never be this high again, meaning management must seriously consider a deadline deal.
