After missing the playoffs for four straight seasons, the San Francisco Giants came out of nowhere to win 107 games in 2021. They are positioned to be in Wild Card contention again this time around with a 40-38 record in early July. That makes them a sneaky buyer at the upcoming MLB trade deadline.

San Francisco Giants Trade Rumors

The Giants have a few roster holes they could address, but ESPN's David Schoenfield sees them focusing on a starting pitcher above all else. One name he suggests as a target is Kansas City Royals veteran Zack Greinke, who owns a 2-5 record, 4.85 ERA and 1.31 WHIP across 13 starts in 2022.

The pairing makes sense considering Anthony DeSclafani was recently lost to a season-ending ankle injury and Jakob Junis remains on the 15-day injured list with a hamstring strain. Alex Wood also left his most recent start with hamstring cramps, leaving the team with very little depth on the mound.

Greinke is set to be a free agent at the end of the season, so the risk that comes with trading for him is minimal at this point. The Royals should be looking to unload him for anything they can get given their 29-50 record on the year. It's likely the Giants won't be the only team interested in him, though.

It's worth noting the 38-year-old hurler does own a career record of 221-137 and made the All-Star game as recently as 2019. A change of scenery could bring out the best in Greinke. The Giants are tied for the 10th-best odds to win the World Series at +3000, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
