The Seattle Mariners have caught people off guard this season, occupying the American League's final wild card spot with a 52-45 record. There's still work to be done in the back half of the season and one way that the Mariners can further improve is by bringing in some help before next week's trade deadline.
There are plenty of available players who could help Seattle, but MLB insider Mike Petriello has his eyes on one player in particular. Petriello is listing Boston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez as the perfect fit for the Mariners' needs.
Mariners Trade Rumors
Due to the Red Sox's recent struggles, Martinez is a prime trade candidate. Boston is just 4-13 in its last 17 games and if things don't turn around, management could be pressured to trade the 35-year-old veteran rather than losing him for nothing in free agency.
The Mariners haven't been able to find a consistent DH all season. Adding Martinez to the mix could help change that. The former 2009 20th-round pick has nine home runs and 38 RBIs through 81 games. He hasn't been as productive as in past seasons, but his .302 batting average solidifies him as an offensive threat.
Something else that Martinez brings to the table is his postseason experience. He has nine HRs, 30 RBIs and a .303/.391/.596 slash line in 30 career playoff games. Beyond impressive stats, the Miami, FL native also brings a 2018 World Series ring to the table.
If the Mariners truly believe that Martinez can help take them to the postseason, they must act swiftly. After all, more teams calling the Red Sox about his service will only up the asking price when the last thing Seattle wants to do is blow up its prospect pool for a rental player.
Mariners World Series Odds
As promising as the Mariners have looked at times, they're still on the outside looking in when it comes to title contenders. Seattle's +4500 odds to win the 2022 World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook put them in a three-way tie for 11th-best odds.
