The Kansas City Royals would not have a lot of positive takeaways from the 2022 MLB season if it ended today. The team sits dead last in the AL Central with a 20-41 record and line up to be sellers at the trade deadline.

As clear sellers, ESPN MLB insider Bradford Doolittle recently named the five Royals most likely to be dealt by the August 2 deadline.

Kansas City Royals Trade Rumors

Doolittle explained that Kansas City should soon start focusing on youth and preparing for its minor league stars to join the majors. That means an aging pitcher like Zack Greinke has to be shopped. Getting anyone useful for the future back for a 38-year-old with a 5.05 ERA would be a smart move.

Another pair of players that likely do not fit into the Royals' future is outfielder Andrew Benintendi and first baseman Carlos Santana. Both players become unrestricted free agents at the end of the season and could be intriguing for contending teams in need of some bench pop in the late innings.

Catcher Salvador Perez and utility player Whit Merrifield were also brought up by Doolittle, but he made it clear that the package in return would have to be substantial. Perez is a seven-time All-Star and Merrifield led the league in stolen bases last year (40) while appearing in every single game.

This trade deadline will go a long way in showing whether or not Kansas City is ready to pull the plug and go into full rebuild mode. With big name prospects like Nick Pratto and Vinnie Pasquantino chomping at the bit to get their shot, it's only a matter of time before a spot opens up.
