It looks like Mike Evans is going to miss Tom Brady's debut with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team listed the wide receiver as doubtful for their Week 1 matchup with the New Orleans Saints, all but guaranteeing he'll be out on Sunday.
This obviously erases Evans' Week 1 value.
Mike Evans Fantasy Value Week 1
Evans already had a difficult matchup in Week 1. Saints' cornerback Marshon Lattimore shut him down through two games last year, holding him to 34.5 receiving yards per contest.
On the off chance he suits up, a hobbled Evans facing an elite cornerback is certainly not a recipe for success.
Chris Godwin Fantasy Value Week 1
This move will likely lead to more volume for Chris Godwin. Godwin has always seemed like a more natural fit with Brady than Evans. With Tampa Bay's top target missing, expect Brady to pepper Godwin with targets early and often.
Still, the loss of Evans and subsequent increase in volume could lead to a slight dip in efficiency from Godwin. We had him as our WR5 prior to this news in Week 1.
Rob Gronkowski Fantasy Value Week 1
Evans' absence is also a boon for Tampa Bay's other pass-catchers, like Rob Gronkowski, Scotty Miller and OJ Howard. Of that bunch, Gronkowski feels like the only one worth playing. We had Gronk as our TE8 prior to this news, and the loss of Evans' certainly increases his value this week.
Howard and Miller are worth monitoring, but starting either player in Week 1 feels like an overreaction.
