SportsNet New York reports that the New York Mets have placed reliever Dellin Betances on the 10-day injury list with a shoulder injury.

This isn't the first time Betances has dealt with this specific injury. Most notably, in 2019, as a member of the New York Yankees, he had a lengthy rehab with strained lat followed by the right shoulder impingement, only to suffer a partially torn left Achilles tendon two batters into his first and only appearance of the season.

Before that season, Betances made at least 66 appearances from 2014 to 2018 with the Yankees. There has been a noticeable drop-off in his velocity following the 2018 season. During his only appearance in 2019, his fastball averaged 94.8 mph. In 2020 it averaged 93.7 mph, and in his only outing this season, the fastball was clocked at just 91.6 mph.

With the recent injuries a concern for Betances, it's no wonder he wasted little time in exercising his $6.8 million player option as opposed to taking a $3 million buyout to be a free agent. Reliever Trevor Hildenberger has been selected to take his place on the roster.
