The New York Mets came into the season with a lot of surrounding hype and they have been able to live up to it so far. They are in the midst of a 7-game winning streak and sit atop the National League East division by 1.5 games with a record of 18-13.
The Mets' winning ways have also caused them to climb up ESPN's latest MLB power rankings. They moved up four spots since last week from No. 15 to No. 11. In fact, the Mets are now ranked a full five spots ahead of the next closest NL East team in the Atlanta Braves.
Mets News: Climb in ESPN MLB Power Rankings
A lot of this team's success has stemmed from stellar starting pitching. The Mets rank No. 2 in the league with a team ERA of 2.89 and are also averaging 10.06 strikeouts per 9 innings pitched (No. 7 in MLB). Free agent signee Taijuan Walker has stepped up so far this season posting a 3-1 record and 2.20 ERA.
On the other side of the ball, the Mets have been benefiting from a lot of situational hitting. They currently have a +4 run differential on the season despite averaging just 3.58 runs per game (No. 27 in MLB). First baseman Pete Alonso has been a lone bright spot on offense and leads the team in runs scored (20), RBI (17) and home runs (5).
Although they still have a lot to improve on, the Mets have been able to put together a winning streak when it looks like they haven't yet reached their full potential.
The Mets have odds set at -105 to win the NL East division, according to MLB odds posted on FanDuel Sportsbook. They also have the fourth-best odds to win the World Series at +950.
