The New York Mets just made the biggest and fairly unexpected splash of the offseason by signing superstar pitcher Max Scherzer to a 3-year, $130 million deal.
Max Scherzer Mets Contract
Heading into the offseason, and even as recently as late last week, the Los Angeles Dodgers were seen as the heavy favorites to retain Scherzer's services, but Mets' billionaire owner Steve Cohen's wallet had different plans.
World Series Odds 2022
This move represents a potential major power shift in the National League, simply by taking away the Dodgers best pitcher and moving him to the Mets. The Dodgers still remain the World Series betting favorites for 2022 as of now at +600 on FanDuel Sportsbook, but the Mets aren't too far behind, sitting at +1100, tied for the third-best odds in baseball.
The offseason is still young too. However, with a looming lockout coming in the next few days, teams are scrambling to get deals done soon, and the Mets got the biggest deal done so far. There is still plenty the Mets can do to improve their chances, including bringing back infielder Javy Baez, and further improving their starting pitching and bullpen.
Mets World Series Odds
The Houston Astros sit in second place at +850 odds to win next year's World Series, while the Chicago White Sox are also tied with the Mets. The Toronto Blue Jay and New York Yankees slightly trail that group, both at +1200.
With a ton of offseason left to go and some uncertainty looming, these odds will surely shift before opening day, but as of now, the Mets are taking a massive step in the right direction.
