The New York Mets' chances of staving off the Atlanta Braves in the National League East division took a big hit this past week when pitcher Max Scherzer was placed on the injured list. However, the veteran ace is already set to take a big step in his recovery by throwing a bullpen session on Sunday.

Max Scherzer Injury Update

Mets fans had a right to panic when Scherzer was placed on the IL because it was due to irritation on his left side, which is the same side that caused him to miss several weeks earlier in the season. He has stressed that it is not a significant injury, though, and this latest development proves that is true.

Throwing a bullpen session means that Scherzer is on schedule to only miss one or two turns in the rotation and return to the mound in the middle of September. That would be a huge boost to the Mets down the stretch and in the playoffs. Of course, that is assuming the bullpen session goes well.

Keep in mind Scherzer is in the midst of another stellar season. The three-time Cy Young winner owns a 9-4 record to go along with a 2.26 ERA and 0.92 WHIP across 20 starts. He has also struck out 153 batters in 127.2 innings and has given up more than two earned runs just twice in his last 14 starts.

The first date Scherzer is eligible to be activated from the injured list is Sunday, Sept. 18. Whether or not he will be able to get enough rest and recovery time before that remains to be seen. For now, the Mets have the third-best odds to win the World Series at +500, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
