Teams around Major League Baseball have been forced to trim their rosters down to meet the 13-pitcher ahead of Monday's deadline. One of the clubs that sent players packing is the Seattle Mariners, who designated two veterans for assignment: relievers Sergio Romo and Roenis Elias.

Seattle Mariners Roster News

When it comes to Romo, 39, the writing has been on the wall for the 15-year veteran. His first season with the Mariners has been nothing short of a disaster, resulting in career-worsts in both ERA (8.16) and WHIP (1.535) in 17 relief appearances.

Meanwhile, Elias returns to Triple-A Tacoma, where he initially began the 2022 baseball season. He was decent in seven appearances with the Mariners, pitching to a 3.52 ERA with six strikeouts over 7.2 innings. Assuming that he can remain strong in the minors, Seattle will likely give him another shot later this year.

Romo and Elias' demotion also opened up room for the Mariners to activate Ken Giles from the 60-day injured list. The veteran closer has looked rusty with a 19.64 ERA (no, that's not a typo) in nine rehab appearances (two starts) as tries to rebound from Tommy John surgery.

Giles, who hasn't pitched in the Majors since 2020, has a career ERA of 2.74 with 115 saves in 357 relief appearances. If he can even get somewhat close to that level, the Mariners' bullpen will be better because of it.

Mariners World Series Odds

Only time will tell if Monday's moves were enough to help turn Seattle's season around. The Mariners currently have +12000 odds to win the 2022 World Series, ranking No. 18 on FanDuel Sportsbook.
