Mariners Add Outfield Depth With Gold Glover

The Seattle Mariners are trying to improve on their accomplishments from last season, where they reached the playoffs for the first time in over two decades.

With the addition of Kolton Wong, and a full season of Luis Castillo and Robbie Ray at the top of the rotation, plus the presumed improvement of Rookie of the Year Julio Rodriguez, Seattle is poised for a run at the AL West title in 2023.

Mariners Sign Kole Calhoun

The Mariners aren't done making moves yet though. On Thursday they signed Kole Calhoun to a minor-league contract.

While Calhoun is a veteran who brings a wealth of experience, he has seen his numbers drop in recent years, hitting below the Mendoza line in 2022 with the Texas Rangers, slashing .196/.257/.330.

He did play all three outfield positions last season and while Seattle has those spots locked up for now with AJ Pollack, Julio Rodriguez, and Jarred Kelenic, Calhoun could serve as a fourth outfielder or depth spot. He could also be a great teacher and clubhouse presence for a guy like Jarred Kelenic, who after being a top prospect, has struggled immensely on the big-league level.

If Calhoun makes the roster, he will have a potentially valuable role. Although, he will also have to bump his numbers back up to closer to his career averages if he hopes to make the most of that chance if he's provided it.
