With a handful of teams needing a new starting quarterback, Las Vegas Raiders backup Marcus Mariota has become an attractive trade option this offseason. He may not require a ton of draft capital to acquire, and there's the hope that he could break out with the right team.
Marcus Mariota Patriots Trade Rumors
ProFootballFocus thinks the New England Patriots could pull off a deal, and presented a realistic trade package on their behalf for Mariota.
PFF takes cue from the Teddy Bridgewater trade in 2018, theorizing the Pats could offer a third-round pick (No. 96) for the Raiders' QB. Bridgewater was traded by the New York Jets to the New Orleans Saints for a third-round pick, and that could be the going rate to acquire a backup.
The No. 96 selection is actually a compensatory pick the Patriots received when Tom Brady left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last offseason, and it'd be quite something if New England landed its next franchise quarterback with an assist from Brady.
Mariota has shown flashes of brilliance in his six seasons, but he's struggled with turnovers in recent years and has just a 29-32 all-time record as a starter.
However, the talent and potential is there. While the Cam Newton experiment didn't work out, this is a low-cost flier for the Patriots to take. If there's a system where Mariota might find success, New England is certainly the place, although there's other suitors in the mix.
